10 Simple (But Not So Silly) Interview Tips:
1️⃣ Be on time: The message you’re sending is: “I’m reliable, considerate, and I respect people’s time.”
That’s the kind of first impression that sticks.
2️⃣ Dress appropriately: No need for a full suit and tie (especially in renewables in 2025!) — but maybe skip the shorts and flip-flops 😉..
3️⃣ Prepare for your interview: Take the time to research the company.
Get to know its projects, team and values.
Prepare relevant questions so you don’t show up empty-handed — it also proves genuine interest in the opportunity.
4️⃣ Be polite and modeste: It sounds obvious, but many candidates overplay it to prove their worth.
On the flip side, too much modesty can come across as a lack of confidence.
As with most things, the right balance wins.
4️⃣.1️⃣ Being likeable can sometimes matter more than being the best (Yes, even I, as a recruiter, shouldn’t say that… but studies back it up!):
- Find something you really like about the company and mention it
- Give a genuine compliment (without overdoing it)
- Talk about a neutral topic you both find interesting (without drifting too far off course)
- Show curiosity: ask the recruiter what kind of person they’re looking for and how the role fits into the company
- Show enthusiasm about the position and the company
- Smile, make eye contact
- Mirror your interviewer’s gestures naturally
5️⃣Active listening: Use active listening to help project yourself into the role.
Ask follow-up questions and build on what’s being discussed instead of repeating what’s already in your CV.
This shows genuine engagement and helps your interviewer visualise you in the job.
6️⃣Don’t badmouth anyone: Stay honest and transparent about previous employers without gossiping.
Studies show that when you speak negatively about others, people subconsciously associate those traits with you (Richard Wiseman, Psychologist).
So stay classy — talk facts, not drama.
7️⃣ Be yourself: Being overly formal can create distance.
If you sound too stiff, the interviewer might think you’re uncomfortable.
Be natural — relaxed but professional.
8️⃣Don’t overreact to anything : We all tend to think our mistakes look worse than they do.
Don’t panic, apologise if needed (or even smile about it), and move on.
Overreacting draws more attention to the slip than the slip itself — it’s called the spotlight effect.
9️⃣ Strength and weakness: Not my favourite question, but here’s how to handle it smartly:
-
If asked directly, start with your strengths — the first thing you say leaves the strongest impact.
-
If you have genuine limitations (skills, mobility, experience), don’t save them for the end.
Be upfront — it shows honesty.
If you wait until the last minute, it might feel like you were hiding it.
🔟 Say thank you: It sounds basic, but don’t skip it!
Thank your interviewer for their time, and don’t hesitate to follow up with a short email a few days later to reaffirm your motivation.
Remember: Recruitment goes both ways — the recruiter chooses a candidate who fits the company, and the candidate chooses the company that fits them.
Bonus from Richard Wiseman’s book, psychologist
=> Choose the middle way : sitting in the middle of the table tends to give a better impression (the “centre-stage effect” — people often see the middle spot as the most confident).
=> Mind your language : keep it simple. Don’t try to sound overly intellectual — it often has the opposite effect (“know-it-all syndrome”).
